The travisher is a traditional tool used for shaping Windsor chair seats. The shape and design of this travisher has been developed in conjunction with Peter Tree, one of Britain's leading Windsor chair makers with over thirty years experience.

The travisher is made from air dried beech, treated with raw linseed oil, and is fitted with a hardwood mouth, to minimise wear on this area.

The thick blade is made from O1 high carbon tool steel and comes honed and ready for immediate use. There is a small amount of adjustment in the blade, allowing you to take finer or larger cuts. The blade is easily re- moved for sharpening, by means of two thumb screws.

The travisher performs best when used across the grain, in firm, full length strokes. When using on tricky grain or very hard wood, we recom- mend that you close the mouth right up and take lots of very fine cuts.

You may also consider using a lubricant such as washing up liquid or an oil / wax. The shavings come out of the back of the travisher, as with a traditional spokeshave, making it self emptying and preventing blockages. This is an indispensable tool in the hand crafted chair maker's
tool box.
