    Ray Iles Planes

Production of wooden infill planes by makers such as Mathieson and Spiers, largely ceased before the Second World War (with the exception of Norris, whose planes were still being advertised up until the early 1950’s).

These planes are now highly collectable and much sought after. As a consequence, they have become very expensive, but they are also still very much in demand by cabinet makers and craftsmen.

There are a few wooden infill planes being produced today, but as a general rule, these are quite costly. It is for this reason that Ray decided to make a range of planes, possessing the quality of the original infill planes, but at a price which made them more accessible to the user.

A5 Coffin Shaped Smoother

Based on the late type Norris A5, with dimensions taken from the original, the Ray Iles A5 is of steel construction, keeping it light and strong, with a rosewood infill and a gunmetal lever cap. The Norris type adjuster is also made to the same specifications as the originals.

All planes are fitted with a 2 1/8” iron, made from A2, which is a high quality air hardened tool steel with excellent edge keeping qualities. Each iron is hardness tested to 60-62 Rockwell.

A6 Parallel Sided Smoother

Same specification as the A5, but parallel.
